GSB offers full support to Hotel Memorial Union
September 23, 2008
The Government of the Student Body voted in favor of offering their full support to Hotel Memorial Union, Wednesday night, calling it an important entity in the community.
The Senate resolution states that “support from present and future alumni is critical in keeping the landmarks and traditions of Iowa State University as beautiful and thriving as they were for students many decades ago.” The Senate agreed and voted in favor of offering support to the Hotel Memorial Union.
Richard Reynolds, director of the Memorial Union, was present at Wednesday’s meeting and expressed his appreciation for GSB’s support, saying he hopes GSB will raise awareness to students on campus.
Senator Emily Meggers, public relations committee member and sophomore in veterinary medicine, said the public relations committee has not yet discussed, in depth, ways in which GSB plans to raise awareness of the hotel.
“The Hotel Memorial Union is a part of Iowa State history,” said Meggers, who is supportive of the cause.
Also at the GSB meeting, Cyclones Rebuilding Iowa was granted funds in order to take trips to various Iowa cities affected by the floods.
CyBuild is a relatively new organization, implemented in August primarily by construction engineering students. The students involved set out to provide aid to ailing communities affected by the floods. President Cory McDermott, graduate student in civil, construction and environmental engineering, said the organization is open to all students and is in the process of recruiting new members.
Twenty-seven members of CyBuild will travel to New Hartford, on Sept. 27 to rebuild the small community of 800.
“If Iowa State can save this one small community, then we can help others,” McDermott said.
However, a concern was raised that the infant organization would not generate enough interest from the student body to support the amount of funds CyBuild required to go on trips.
An amendment was made stating the allocation of funds for trips occurring after Nov. 22 would not be funded by GSB. The Senate enacted the funding of five endeavors to take place before Dec. 6.
Representatives from CyBuild were optimistic about generating interest from the entirety of the student body, citing the club as an “umbrella organization” and said they would be able to use all funds granted by GSB.
Funds were also allocated to support the expenses of promotional GSB items, such as plastic beads and cups, to be passed out at the ISU football game against Nebraska. The Senate bill states the promotional giveaways will ‘further accomplish [GSB’s] public relations goal.”
GSB has been discussing various ways to make GSB more visible on campus. Co-author of the bill Christine Wimmer, junior in art and design, said this would be a good way for GSB to “promote itself.”
A new College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Senator was voted in at Wednesday’s meeting. Peter Choi, senior in psychology, said his goal for GSB is to make it more visible on campus.
The Special Allocations process is open to student organizations who missed regular allocations. Two informational sessions will be held Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. and on Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Union.
