Woman escapes serious injury in boat accident

HARPERS FERRY, Iowa (AP) — An Oelwein woman escaped serious injury Wednesday after she was tossed from a fishing boat driven by her husband.
Edna Shields, 68, was in a boat piloted by her husband, John Shields, when the boat hit a submerged object in the Mississippi River, near Harper’s Ferry. The collision knocked the motor handle from John Shields’ hands. That sent the boat into a tailspin, and Edna Shields was tossed into the water.
The boat then ran her over, and she was cut with the propellor.
Shields was taken officials to Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was later airlifted to Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis.
State conservation Burt Walters says Shields suffered non-life threatening injuries.
