Gridiron Picks Week 5
September 22, 2008
1. Corey Aldritt (8-2, 34-6)
2. Matt Gubbels (6-4, 33-7)
3. Luke Plansky (4-6, 30-10)
4. Chris Conetzkey (6-4, 29-11)
Colorado @ Florida State
Matt: Colorado — Bobby Bowden can’t win a game against a decent team.
Luke: Florida State — Buffs come back down to earth on the road.
Corey: Florida State — I don’t think Florida State can lose two weeks in a row unless Bobby Bowden suits up to play quarterback.
Chris: Colorado — Tough road game. Guess we’ll find out if Colorado is any good.
Northwestern @ Iowa
Matt: Iowa — Hawkeyes will bounce back after Jake Christensen lost the game for them last week.
Luke: Iowa — I legitimately feel bad for Jake Christensen; how can you learn from a year you were sacked 46 times?
Corey: Iowa — Yawn … this game will be a snoozer.
Chris: Northwestern — WhoHoo!!! Rose Bowl here we come. Sorry, just wanted to do what every other fake Northwestern fan in Illinois is doing.
Illinois @ Penn State
Matt: Penn State — JoePa and company have looked impressive so far … the Illini and their “Juice” have not.
Luke: Penn State — Nittany Lions are my favorites to win the Big 10 and BCS Bowl Game.
Corey: Penn State — The Nittany Lions make a statement to the rest of the Big 10 that they are the team to beat.
Chris: Penn State — What is older? Coach Joe Paterno … or making fun of Joe Paterno’s age?
TCU @ Oklahoma
Matt: Oklahoma — This will be closer than expected but the Sooners offense is absolutely lights-out.
Luke: Oklahoma — Sooners are averaging nearly 55 points per game.
Corey: Oklahoma — The Sooners better not take TCU lightly because the Mountain West Conference might be the third best conference this year.
Chris: Oklahoma — Ah … TCU. Brings back memories of when Iowa State went to a bowl game. Sigh … those were the days.
Purdue @ Notre Dame
Matt: Notre Dame — This is an absolutely huge game for both teams and I think Jimmy Claussen is going to make enough plays to lead the Irish to a win.
Luke: Purdue — I don’t know why I picked Notre Dame last week.
Corey: Notre Dame — The Irish will win because of “Touchdown Jesus,” the sweetest statue at any university.
Chris: Purdue — Notre Dame isn’t good.
USC @ Oregon State
Matt: USC — The Trojans should not lose in the regular season.
Luke: USC — Trojans could beat the Chiefs and the Rams.
Corey: USC — The Beavers will try their best to take down Trojans, but the Trojans are too tough and their offense will score multiple times.
Chris: USC — Only because I root for teams with similar uniforms to the Cyclones.
Virginia Tech @ Nebraska
Matt: Virginia Tech — The Huskers will go down because of Steve Pederson’s refusal to schedule anyone in the first three games. I wonder why he and Bill Callahan don’t have jobs.
Luke: Virginia Tech — Hokies were already tested in the non-conference; Huskers are strangers to competition.
Corey: Nebraska — First big win for Bo Pelini, even though it’s against a pretty bad Hokie team.
Chris: Nebraska — That hurt.
Wisconsin @ Michigan
Matt: Wisconsin — Michigan just doesn’t have enough offense.
Luke: Michigan — Upset special.
Corey: Wisconsin — I hope I’m not the only one who enjoys seeing Michigan this bad.
Chris: Wisconsin — So far there hasn’t been any winner since Rich Rodrigez left West Virginia.
Troy @ Oklahoma State
Matt: Troy — The game with Ohio State showed me the Trojans are going to pull the upset for the second straight season.
Luke: Oklahoma State — Cowboys will start 5-0 and finish 8-4; they play the Big 12 elite on the later part of their schedule.
Corey: Oklahoma State — The Cowboys remember last year’s loss to Troy and they won’t let it happen again.
Chris: Oklahoma State — Because the Cowboys’ coach is a man. (Monday was the one year anniversary).
Alabama @ Georgia
Matt: Georgia — The Tide have looked better through the first four games but I can’t in my right mind pick a Nick Saban team, plus the ‘Dawgs have Knowshon Moreno.
Luke: Alabama — Saban knows how to win a big game; Crimson Tide have looked tough so far.
Corey: Georgia — The Tide will look washed up against the defense of Georgia.
Chris: Georgia — Still not a full Bulldog believer, but I’ll stick with them at home.
