Tournament motivates softball team

As the ISU softball team opened its fall schedule last weekend, shortstop Carrie Monroe remembered what it was like to face a real competitor.

“It felt good to get out on the field and win,” Monroe said.

Iowa State completed a 2-1 record on the weekend against in-state rivals Iowa, Northern Iowa and Drake. The Cyclones beat the Bulldogs 4-0, lost to Iowa 4-0, and finished the weekend with a 14-8 win over UNI.

The Cyclones came to practice this week after their loss to Iowa feeling ready and motivated.

“We can see that we are a stronger team than last year’s team,” Monroe said.

Iowa State was encouraged by players stepping up during crucial moments of the game. Dalyn Varela hit the ball well against UNI, Monroe said. Utility player Stacey Carabello contributed offensively in pinch hitting, and outfielder Bianca Lopez advanced runners.

Sophomore outfielder Carleigh Berry gave the Cyclones opportunities in every game by getting on base. Monroe had two timely hits, both of which allowed the Cyclones to score runs.

The Cyclones learned what they need to improve on in their loss to Iowa. The Cyclones walked a batter in the first inning, followed by a hit batter. With two runners on base, Iowa hit a home run to take the lead 3-0 in the first.

Iowa State faced its first competitive pitcher against Iowa and struggled to score runs. Iowa scored in the fourth inning to make the final score 4-0.

Despite the lost, the Cyclones made several impressive defensive plays that kept the score close. First baseman Sydni Jones jumped to snatch a line drive and prevent base runners from advancing. Alex Johnson also picked a Hawkeye off at second base.

With five more games left to be played this month, Monroe thinks the team will continue to improve.

“This is going to be our best season so far,” Monroe said.

The Cyclones will play a double header against Muscatine Community College on Sunday at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
