Diversity on GSB agenda for Wednesday
September 1, 2008
The diversity of the senators elected to the Government of the Student Body will be discussed tonight at the organization’s second meeting of the semester.
The upsurge in new members raised questions last week about the diversity of the organization, as most of the additions are white males.
Daniel Fischer, GSB president and senior in agricultural business, said this is an issue that is being discussed by the Legislature.
There is no application process to become a member of GSB, Fischer said, and most members are referred to the constituency council by other members of the group.
“We’re forming a commission to make sure that these positions are offered to all students on campus,” Fischer said, regarding plans to make student leadership on campus more diverse.
GSB leaders plan to discuss the diversity commission in greater detail as the semester progresses, Fischer said.
There will be two new senators seated at the meeting Wednesday night. The business council and agriculture council will be nominating their respective senators to be voted on by the council.
Changes to voting requirements will also be voted on during Wednesday’s meeting. Concerns have been raised regarding the number of student senators who are involved with other on-campus activities missing meetings and how their absence affects the vote of capital projects.
In the past, two-thirds of all GSB members were required to vote in favor of a bill concerning the transfer of funds from the Capital Projects account, as well as votes concurring changes to the GSB bylaws, in order for the motions to pass. Wednesday’s bill would change the existing voting rules and would require two-thirds of the members present to vote in favor.
“The bill has a good chance of passing,” Fischer said. “People have had the experience of missing members. Experienced senators will likely want the bill to pass.”
GSB’s contribution to Winter Fest will be discussed at the meeting Wednesday. GSB has provided funding for free ice-skating and horse-drawn carriage rides in the past, and plans to continue the tradition this year. In addition, the organization will be providing funding for the Winter Fest advertisements. Details of the endeavor will be discussed at Wednesday’s meeting.
Future budget support for the Cyclone Stampede Rodeo will also be discussed. The Rodeo was part of the regular GSB allocation process in the past, but was recently moved to the sports club council, which receives most of its funds from fundraising undertakings.
The Cyclone Stampede Rodeo was not prepared for the amount of fundraising necessary to continue operations because they were used to receiving allocations from GSB. Wednesday’s meeting will cover what the GSB plans to do about Cyclone Stampede Rodeo’s insufficient funds.
