Tigers roar past Cyclones
September 26, 2008
On a night when not much went right for the ISU soccer team, everything went Missouri’s way as the Tigers shutout the Cyclones, 3-0.
The tone of the game was set from the get-go as Missouri controlled the offensive flow of the game for most of the first half. At the 9:41 mark, the Tigers struck with their first goal on a perfect cross from Michelle Collins to Kristin Andrighetto.
Going into the half, Iowa State was trailing only by one, but the Tigers clearly outplayed and out-muscled the Cyclones.
“Missouri did what we thought they would do,” said head coach Wendy Dillinger. “They [Missouri] are athletic, great up top, and have good players.”
The second half was no better for the Cyclones as Missouri picked up the physical play and kept the onslaught of pressure on.
“We have to play tougher. They came out sliding and playing tough and we needed to match that,” Dillinger said.
There were very few chances for the Cyclones in the second half because of Missouri’s pressure. The Tigers netted a goal by the same combination of Collins to Andrighetto to all but seal the match.
Iowa State could not get into any rhythm and only mustered four second-half shots.
A late goal by Alysha Bonnick off a Cyclone defender added to the entourage of shots by the Tigers.
When it was all said and done, Missouri held an astounding 31-9 shot advantage over Iowa State as well as a 12-2 corner kick lead.
Iowa State next take on the Kansas Jayhawk’s at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Jayhawks are coming off an overtime loss to Nebraska in their first conference match.
“[We] need to learn from our mistakes in this game and then just watch tape and prepare tomorrow to get ready,” Dillinger said.
