Distance runners travel to Stanford, sprinters to Missouri this weekend
April 3, 2008
The ISU women’s track and field team will split its squad this weekend, sending the distance runners to the Stanford Invitational, while the sprinters will travel to Springfield, Mo., for the Missouri State University Big Bear Invitational.
Distance runner Lisa Koll will make her outdoor season debut after an exceptional indoor season in which she was named an All-American in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs. Koll will be competing in the 10,000-meter run at Stanford, in which she was the Big 12 Champion last year.
Koll will be joined by teammate Grace Kemmey in the 10,000. Kemmey, also making her outdoor debut, is coming off an indoor season in which she garnered second place – behind Koll – in the 5,000 during the Big 12 Championships.
The sprinters are just hoping the weather will cooperate so they can post some quality times and, hopefully, qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships.
“We’re looking forward to going down to Missouri State because there is supposed to be good weather,” said sprinter coach Ronnie Williams. “We ran into some inclement weather last week, so we’re looking to going down there and performing and getting some good marks and moving forward from there.”
Lashawn Wright will compete in the 100-meter dash for the Cyclones and hopes to lead the Cyclones with a top performance.
Soccer-player-turned-runner Molly Lohry hopes to keep the momentum of her second-place finish last week going into her the 800-meter run this weekend.
Perhaps the biggest news of the weekend, however, is the return of standout hurdler Jenna Caffrey, who missed the entire indoor season due to injury but will compete this weekend. Caffrey qualified for the outdoor NCAA Championships as a freshman last season and hopes to get back on track this weekend.
The Stanford Invitational kicks off at 10:45 p.m. Friday with section 5 of the women’s 5,000-meter run, and the MSU Big Bear Invitational is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Saturday with the men’s hammer throw.
