Veishea organizers bring food to campus

Imagine a place where you can wander from stand to stand, collecting such culinary delicacies as corn dogs, turkey legs and cheese curds.

No, you are not at the Iowa State Fair or your local, county festival.

You’ve found yourself at Taste of Veishea, held next to Lake Laverne – on Union Drive – and at the Molecular Biology parking lot throughout Veishea this week.

Although vendors have always attended Veishea, the Taste of Veishea event was first started in 2006, after Veishea was brought back to the university.

“It was [the Veishea committee’s] goal to make Taste of Veishea a destination place during the week,” said Nick Dial, senior in history and co-chairman of the Veishea catering coordination committee.

Originally, Taste of Veishea was held only next to Lake Laverne; however, this year it will include the Molecular Biology parking lot. Dial said an additional spot where students can get food will be “an integral part to spreading Veishea.”

The catering coordination committee, with the guidance of the tasting coordinator, was responsible for finding new locations for Taste of Veishea, as well as contacting vendors to serve food over the weekend.

“We used several places here in Ames,” Dial said.

The vendors will offer foods such as nachos, corn dogs, popcorn, turkey legs, fajitas, gyros, cotton candy, Philly cheese steak sandwiches, Mexican cuisine, cheese curds and funnel cakes.

Dial said he hopes such a large assortment of options will allow people to wander through Veishea and “enjoy the wide variety of food.”

Taste of Veishea will also host Midnight Pancakes on Friday and Saturday nights, and Walking Tacos on Saturday night.

The vendors will be selling food from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday.
