Speakers, music to accompany march
March 23, 2008
In addition to the speeches and live entertainment of the rallies of previous years, the Time for Peace rally this year will include the opportunity to meet with some of the events’ sponsors, who will have tables set up at the Memorial Union. Sponsors of this event include Alliance for Global Justice, the Catholic Peace Ministry, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and Time for Peace.
The organizers also chose a variety of speakers to talk about their experiences and opinions regarding the Iraq War.
“We wanted to get local people,” said Greg Bonett, senior in electrical engineering and treasurer for the club. “We chose people who could talk about different aspects of the war.”
The group will meet at 5 p.m. Monday night in the East Ames Hy-Vee parking lot, 640 Lincoln Way, and at 5:30 the group will begin marching down Lincoln Way, eventually ending up at the Memorial Union.
Upon arriving at the MU, Public Property, an Iowa City-based reggae group, will provide music, along with It’s True and So Much Fun.
Speakers at this years’ rally include Angela Campbell,a lawyer who served as a federal public defender and served as legal counsel for several detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; William Meyers, who served as a terrorism specialist in the U.S. Marine Corps and Iowa State Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad.
Following the speakers, Public Property will take the stage again.
Event organizers expect counter-protests, as there have been some in previous years. Bonnett said counter-protesters have always been substantially outnumbered by those attending the rally itself.
“The goal of this is to bring people together who want to remember and commemorate,” said Sue Dinsdale, Huxley resident and an organizer of the event. “Obviously, we wish it were a celebration that the war was over.”
