LETTER: GSB senators show
March 10, 2008
Government of the Student Body elections began this week, and there has been a lot of coverage in the Daily and a lot of things going on around campus mainly for the GSB presidential nominations.
I am aware of the importance of GSB, and I am also aware of the importance of having mature and intelligent students on the council. In this light, I would like to mention how disappointed I was today in class to hear a few members on GSB chatting about the presidential elections. There was even a comment by one of the members that one of the candidates was a “douchebomb, when a douchebag isn’t good enough.”
There were further comments from another individual (who, once class started, went up to the front of the class to pass out candy and tell everyone to vote on the elections) that if a certain candidate won, there was going to be no cooperation with that person, and there would undoubtedly be war in the GSB until this presidential candidate’s resignation or impeachment.
It is understandable for GSB members to have a preference for whom they would like to see win. It is also understandable to have certain opinions, but to express those opinions in a classroom of people and make sure everyone can hear your conversation reflects very poorly on GSB as a whole.
The goal of the GSB should be for cooperation and compromise to accomplish things on behalf of the student body. Hopefully with these elections we will have good candidates win. More importantly, hopefully the candidates who win – and everyone else on GSB – will represent the organization with a little more dignity and maturity than was displayed in my class today.
