Cory Johnson to leave men’s basketball team
March 26, 2008
The ISU men’s basketball team announced Cory Johnson, a reserve forward, will transfer from the program.
Johnson, who played in 27 games this year, averaging 11.4 minutes and 4.2 points a game, cited a desire to see the court more as his reason for departure.
“I simply want to earn more playing time,” Johnson said in a statement. “My time at Iowa State has been terrific. It was my personal dream to participate in intercollegiate basketball at the highest level. Playing at Iowa State and in the Big 12 Conference was a great experience. At the same time, I want to find a school where I can be a key contributor in the team’s lineup.”
Johnson will have two years of eligibility remaining.
He is the third player to leave the team since November. Guard Marcus Brister left the team in November and forward Clayton Vette transfered in December.
Despite the previous losses, coach Greg McDermott still allowed his release.
“Cory has been a real asset to the Iowa State men’s basketball program with his strong work ethic on the court and in school,” McDermott said in the statement. “One thing you can count on with Cory is extreme effort. In fairness to Cory, I can also understand his desire to see more time on the court. I’m obligated to give him the right advice and help him identify a school that suits his desires athletically and academically.”
