Wrestlers prepare for nationals

Luke Plansky

The No. 1 Iowa wrestling team unseated defending NCAA champion Minnesota in last weekend’s Big 10 Tournament, cementing the Hawkeyes as the favorites to win the March 20-22 NCAA Tournament in St. Louis.

But third-ranked Iowa State has one advantage in its attempt to upset its in-state rivals. All 10 Cyclone wrestlers qualified for nationals.

Only one other school – Edinboro – will send its full lineup to nationals.

Here is a brief look at Iowa State’s qualifiers.

125 pounds – Tyler Clark

Grade: Freshman

Record: 18-10

Rank: 16th

Vs. top 20: 4-8.

Vs. top 10: 0-5

After taking over the starting job in mid-January, Clark has shown himself to be a legitimate threat to place at the NCAA Tournament. Over the summer, the true freshman overcame tears in the lateral and meniscus cartilage of his left knee and has competed with some of the best lightweights in the country. Clark battled Nebraska’s defending NCAA champion Paul Donahoe in two one-point losses during the last month.

133 pounds – Nick Fanthorpe

Grade: Sophomore

Record: 28-4

Rank: 7th

Vs. top 20: 11-4

Vs. top 10: 5-4

Fanthorpe is seen as a favorite to earn All-American status next weekend in St. Louis. After coming one match short of placing at last year’s NCAA Tournament, Fanthorpe moved up a weight class this season and has been one of the Cyclones’ most consistent performers, winning his first Big 12 title last Saturday. His four losses this season all came at the hands of opponents ranked in the top six.

141 pounds – Nick Gallick

Grade: Sophomore

Record: 22-11

Rank: 12th

Vs. top 20: 5-9

Vs. top 10: 1-7

Gallick has struggled at a new weight against a schedule of elite opponents this season, but his trials paid off on Saturday with his first Big 12 Championship. His first win against a top-10 opponent this season came in the conference finals against Oklahoma State’s third-ranked senior Nathan Morgan. Gallick joined his brother Nate – a three-time Big 12 Champion – in the conference record books.

149 pounds – Mitch Mueller

Grade: Sophomore

Record: 21-11

Rank: Unranked

Vs. top 20: 3-11

Vs. top 10: 0-6

One of six Cyclones to move up a weight class this season, Mueller dropped out of the rankings at the beginning of January. The sophomore was ranked 10th at 141 pounds for much of last season before dislocating his right elbow in February 2007. Healthy and more experienced, Mueller must contend with arguably the toughest weight division of 2008.

Grade: Sophomore

Record: 28-4

Rank: 13th

Vs. top 20: 8-4

Vs. top 10: 1-3

Cyler avenged a mid-February loss to Missouri’s 12th-ranked Michael Chandler in last Saturday’s Big 12 Tournament finals, becoming the third Sanderson to win a Big 12 title. The only wrestlers Sanderson has lost twice to in college are Minnesota’s Dustin Schlatter, Stanford’s J.P. O’Connor and graduated Oklahoma Sooner Matt Storniolo – all of whom have been ranked either first or second. Sanderson came within one match of placing at last year’s NCAA Tournament and will again be a top contender to do so.

165 pounds – Jon Reader

Grade: Freshman

Record: 26-7

Rank: 8th

Vs. top 20: 3-5

Vs. top 10: 2-5

Reader has lost five of his last eight matches, but will likely still be seeded in the top 12 in his weight class. His only loss by more than three points this season was to Iowa’s defending national champion Mark Perry. From the beginning of the season, the freshman has been seen as a necessary component of an Iowa State national team title run.

174 pounds – Aron Scott

Grade: Senior

Record: 12-11

Rank: Unranked

Vs. top 20: 1-8

Vs. top 10: 1-5

Scott placed third at last Saturday’s Big 12 Tournament to earn his first berth in the NCAA Tournament. A 149-pounder throughout his career, the Oskaloosa native moved up three weight classes to fill a hole in the Cyclone lineup. A herniated disc in his neck almost ended Scott’s career last season. This season, he has shown his ability to wrestle close matches with top opponents.

184 pounds – Jake Varner

Grade: Sophomore

Record: 25-0

Rank: 1st

Vs. top 20: 11-0

Vs. top 10: 7-0

Varner has established himself as a top candidate for the Dan Hodge Trophy – the Heisman Trophy of wrestling – this season. His power and controlling style has made him one of five undefeated wrestlers going into the NCAA Tournament. That style has also led to close matches throughout the season – 10 of his wins have been by three points or less. This season he has wrestled 10 of the other 14 wrestlers ranked in the top 15, but not Ohio State’s 2nd-ranked sophomore Mike Pucillo or Michigan’s third-ranked junior Tyrel Todd.

197 Pounds – David Bertolino

Grade: Senior

Record: 22-11

Rank: 16th

Vs. top 20: 4-11

Vs. top 10: 2-9

Bertolino has wrestled nine of the top 10 opponents in his weight class this season, scoring his only two victories against that class in his past two meets. The fifth-year senior moved up two weights in the off-season after wrestling at 174 pounds throughout his career. Bertolino beat ninth-ranked Oklahoma senior Joel Flaggert for third place on Saturday to earn his first NCAA Tournament berth.

Heavyweight – David Zabriskie

Grade: Sophomore

Record: 25-5

Rank: 5th

Vs. top 20: 7-5

Vs. top 10: 3-5

All five of Zabriskie’s losses have come to top-7-ranked opponents this season. The sophomore is undersized for the weight class, weighing in at around 235 pounds throughout the season. Zabriskie has a knack for winning close matches, but despite his ranking will have an uphill battle against the top heavyweights in the country.
