First aid kits
March 5, 2008
Whether you need a Band-Aid for a minor injury or find yourself in a more serious situation, having a first aid kit can be a big help.
La’Tifini Zaun, health and safety director of the Lincoln Way Chapter of the American Red Cross, 426 5th St., said first aid kits are important to have.
“There’s a lot of different variables that will come into play to determine what you want,” Zaun said.
For college students, Zaun recommends a personal first aid kit, containing gauze wrap, gauze tape and scissors, among other essentials.
There is also the option of making your own first aid kit, Zaun said. You’ll want to include basic supplies such as bandages, scissors and antibiotic cream.
“You never know when you’re going to need one,” she said. “It’s good to be prepared.”
Zaun said first aid kits come in many kinds, including wilderness kits or baby-sitting kits, and prices can range from $3 to $30.
First aid kits can be purchased at the American Red Cross in Ames. The American Red Cross Web site also offers a variety of kits. One such emergency kit is called the “Safety Tube.” This kit comprises a light stick, whistle, face mask and water pack. The “Personal First Aid Kit” includes supplies for one person for “minor first aid.” For more information, visit www.redcross.org.
