EDITORIAL: Recycle more bottles

Gov. Chet Culver’s bottle deposit bill will not pass the legislature.

Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal said Thursday that some lawmakers are still considering opening the bottle deposit to more types of containers, but he doesn’t see it getting support this year.

Initally, Culver wanted to increase the bottle deposit from five cents to 10, with eight cents being given back to the customer and the other two would given to the state’s Resource Enhancement and Protection fund.

Culver’s main goal was to expand the types of bottles that can be deposited to include water, juice and sports drink bottles.

By adding more types, there would be 330 million bottles that could be deposited that currently are not covered by the bill.

And just this week, Culver backed off doubling the five-cent deposit, but said he would be pressing forward with the law’s expansion.

The bill will not pass, but Culver has promised to continue fighting to get the bill passed on behalf of the people of Iowa.

Nice effort, Culver. We wish the bill passed. Not only would it help prevent pollution in Iowa, it would also increase recycling.
