Looking for a brew that’s out of the ordinary?

Molly Phelps

Maybe you enjoy the taste of Keystone Light. It’s cheap and serves its purpose just as well as the next beer. But if you are looking to class it up, there are plenty of places in Ames that serve more than the standard Bud Light on tap. Here are a few local favorites.

Olde Main Brewing Company

316 Main St.

Located in the Ames’ cultural district, Olde Main Brewing Company has seven house brews, including one called The Dinkey, which is named for Iowa State’s historical train. Olde Main also offers their brews to go, and beer fans can join their “Beer Aficionado Union” – which includes a T-shirt and discounts on drinks!

Old Chicago

1610 S. Kellogg Ave.

Looking for fame? Join Old Chicago’s World Beer Tour; drink 110 beers from all over the globe and your name will join their “Hall of Foam.” Slightly less intense drinkers can stop by and unwind with anything from a Samuel Adams Boston Lager to Warsteiner Premium Dunkel, which is brewed in Germany.

The London Underground

212 Main St.

This British-style pub features Bass Pale Ale, Guinness Stout, Franzishaner Weissbier and more, all on tap. If you’d like something a little different after all that beer, try a Mango Tango from their extensive martini menu.

Corner Pocket and DG’s Tap

125 Main St.

Fifteen pool tables and 18 beers on tap make Corner Pocket a local standby. But if you head upstairs to DG’s Tap, you can find more than 56 microbrews, including some by Olde Main. Bartender Jessica James recommends the Raccoon River and says to stop by on Saturday nights to hear the live bands.

Dublin Bay

320 S. 16th St.

“Slainte chug at” means “Cheers to your health!” in Gaelic, and there are plenty of options to cheers over at Dublin Bay.

Happy Hour is from 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and the restaurant’s menu features many imports, such as Goose Island Honker’s Ale, Shiner Bock, and Bare Knuckle Stout.
