LETTER: Fischer and Luttrell: candidates with practical leadership skills

Daniel Fischer and Maggie Luttrell are the candidates with experienced leadership running in the coming Government of the Student Body elections.

As a former GSB president, I understand the intense work and experience that are necessary to be successful in lobbying the legislature, collaborating with the city and representing students to the university. Fischer and Luttrell are the only candidates who have proven to be successful in each of these areas.

As the director of government relations, Fischer has initiated lobbying efforts at the State Capitol. In GSB’s history, these trips have proven to be a vital step in securing state funding, and Fischer’s dedication to lobbying will continue to benefit students next year. Extensive work needs to be done to decrease students’ debt loads and to collaborate with the Generation Iowa Commission to create new, tangible benefits to keep young people in Iowa, and Fischer’s drive and dedication will allow students to see these changes.

Luttrell currently serves as the ex-officio City Council liaison and chair of the Student Affairs Commission for the city of Ames. Luttrell’s experiences with the city have proven to show her dedication for the Campustown revitalization, appointing students to city commissions, and representing student voices within city issues. The impact of Luttrell’s work is tangible now and will be more so with the Campustown revitalization plans over the coming years.

Finally, both Fischer and Luttrell are representative of students at all university levels. Fischer is a student from Iowa, while Luttrell comes from out of state. They also have experiences in the greek community, residence halls, leadership organizations, learning communities, county boards and many other on and off-campus groups. These diverse experiences will allow them to successfully represent students across the University.

As you cast your ballot on March 10 and 11, vote for the candidates who have the experience, the knowledge and the leadership and will follow through on “real plans for real students.”
