Texas drops Iowa State in overtime heartbreaker
February 8, 2008
A.J. Abrams had 25 and D.J. Augustin added 17 as No. 12 Texas came back and beat the Cyclones, 71-65, in overtime in front of 14,092 at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday.
Jiri Hubalek had 24 for Iowa State, which built up as much as a 13 point lead with just over 16 minutes left in the game.
Iowa State held Longhorn D.J. Augustin in check for most of the game, but the Texas guard made big shots when it mattered down the stretch. Abrams kept Texas in the game with big shot after big shot.
A pink-clad crowd watched in disbelief as the Cyclones let a chance to pull off a big upset in front of a regional ABC crowd slip away. Texas tied the game at 55 with two Augustin free throws with 4:18 left, and took the lead minutes later with a short jumper by Augustin to take a 60-58 lead.
Rahshon Clark then tied the game on a drive and layup.
Augustin gave Texas the lead again with two free throws with 59 seconds left. Hubalek tied the game at 62 with two free throws on the other end with 36 seconds remaining, which would eventually bring the game to overtime as Abrams missed a shot at the buzzer.
Gary Johnson had the first points of overtime for the Longhorns with a short jumper nearly halfway into the period. Augustin put a dagger in Iowa State with a jumper with under a minute left to make it 66-62. The Cyclones weren’t able to get on the board until there were 14.8 seconds left, when a Diante Garrett 3-pointer mad the score 69-65.
ISU coach Greg McDermott had a heated discussion with referees as they walked off the court to boos from the Hilton faithful.
