Top-ranked wrestlers lose to archrival Iowa

ISU wrestler Cyler Sanderson clasped his hands underneath Ryan Morningstar and flipped him onto his back approximately 35 seconds into the third period.

Sanderson tried to pin the Hawkeye’s shoulders to the mat, changing his position but keeping hold of the tightly-locked cradle for almost all of the remainder of the match.

Five matches into Iowa State’s dual against Iowa, Sanderson finally gave the crowd of nearly 9,000 at Hilton Coliseum the feeling of victory. Although the fourth-ranked sophomore 157-pounder won his match by a score of 10-5, he couldn’t get the pin.

Instead of six team points for a pin, the Cyclones got three points for the decision, cutting Iowa’s lead to 13-3 going into intermission.

Even Iowa State’s best moments in the rivalry dual weren’t quite good enough, as the fourth-ranked Hawkeyes (5-0) came into Ames and gave the No. 1 Cyclones (6-1) a black eye.

“I’ve never had more fun in a match,” said 20th-ranked Iowa 133-pounder Joe Slaton, who upset third-ranked Cyclone Nick Fanthorpe, 6-5. “There is nothing better than coming into someone else’s arena, with them filling [it] with Cyclone fans and not letting Hawkeye fans in. There is nothing better than taking it away from them.”

With a 0-0 tie to start the third period, Iowa’s Dan LeClere (141) rode Nick Gallick for 58 seconds before the Cyclone escaped to take a 1-0 lead.

LeClere then scored a takedown with 42 seconds left to win, riding Gallick for the rest of the period to win, 3-1. ISU coach Cael Sanderson, Cyler’s older brother, said at intermission that he tried to help keep the team calm and focused on each wrestler’s individual match.

“I try to train these guys where they don’t worry about what’s going on before them and after them-type mentality, but those little things are big,” said Sanderson, whose teams as a competitor and head coach are 0-6 against Iowa.
