Pre-congressional career
Kucinich was elected to Cleveland, Ohio, City Council in 1969, at the age of 23. In 1975, he became municipal court clerk in Cleveland. In 1977, he was elected mayor of Cleveland. He was mayor for two years, and managed to escape an assassination attempt on his life. After his stint as mayor, he fell off the political radar until 1994, when he won a seat at the State Senate. Two years later, he was elected to the House of Representatives.
Congressional career
Kucinich helped create the U.S. National Health Insurance Act, which would provide for a universal single-payer public health-insurance plan. He is involved with the Education and Labor Committee and the Government Reform Committee.

He is married to Elizabeth Kucinich. He has one daughter, Jacqueline Kucinich.
