Women’s Basketball: Lacey shoots down Michigan with nine three-pointers
November 16, 2007
In the ISU women’s basketball team’s first three games, three different players have scored career-highs in points.
On Friday, it was sophomore point guard Alison Lacey’s turn in a 67-43 win over previously unbeaten Michigan at the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament. Lacey scored 35 points on 13 for 20 shooting from the field and hit 9 of the 13 three-pointers she took.
This performance came after junior Heather Ezell hit 10 threes and scored 32 points against Sacramento State and Nicky Wieben scored 24 against Pepperdine for the Cyclones (3-0).
Lacey sparked the Cyclones right away scoring 19 points in the first six minutes of the game as Iowa State started the game with a 22-1 run. Michigan was able to battle back to 25-15 but Iowa State was still able to take a 37-20 lead into half, with Lacey outscoring the Wolverines (3-1) with 24 in the stanza.
A three by Lacey and a layup by Wieben, who had 12 points in the game got the Cyclones going early in the second half, Michigan could only come within 15 points the rest of the game.
Iowa State made 12 threes in the game, compared to only three for Michigan. The Cyclones were also able to hold the Wolverines to 35 percent from the field, while shooting 45 percent themselves and earning a 37-27 edge on the boards.
Iowa State will now take on 19th-ranked Vanderbilt in the championship game on Sunday at 2 p.m.
