ISU women’s basketball scores 101 in exhibition win
November 1, 2007
ISU women’s basketball coach Bill Fennelly wanted to see his team get off to a solid start against Iowa Wesleyan Sunday.
He got that and then some, when the Cyclones started off the game on a 11-0 run and later had a 42-2 run to open the second half in their 101-38 win over the Tigers in front of a crowd of 9,925 at Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State reached the century mark for the first time since 2004 in its lone exhibition game and had eight players in double figures, led by 15 from sophomore point guard Alison Lacey, who also had eight assists and six steals as well.
Iowa State spearheaded those runs by forcing 35 turnovers, which they scored 52 points off of, while only turning it over 13 times. The Cyclones also used their size advantage for a 34-24 edge on the boards and a 44-14 edge on points in the paint.
Junior college transfer Denae Stuckey had 13 points, seven rebounds, and five steals, as all three newcomers for the Cyclones reached double digits in their first game.
Two staples of teams coached by Fennelly have always been three-point shooting and a fast-paced style. Iowa State got off to a hot start from downtown, hitting nine threes in the first half and 13 for the game while shooting at a 54 percent clip. Junior Heather Ezell had four of those treys in the first half. The Cyclones had 20 points to the Tigers four in transition, and also got several points on quick baskets after the Tigers had stopped the fast break.
