CD Review: AM Syndicate
November 9, 2007
Artist: AM Syndicate
Album: “Liberation”
Release: Nov. 13
Label: Warner Brothers
With their interesting approach of fusing folk and indie, Austin-based three-piece AM Syndicate shows improvement from just a year ago with the release of its second full album, “Liberation.”
Although comparisons have been made with the band’s music to that of Simon and Garfunkel, Blonde Redhead and even Bjork, they seem to have no difficulty creating their own niche in the genre. Vocalist Omar Chavez’s voice gives a melodic, crooning trait to what might otherwise be a fairly standard release, while members Vince Durcan and Golfball add plenty of backup vocals to give depth to the music.
Songs like “Hang Your Fears at the Door and Join Your Future” start with catchy, up-tempo beats, but further draw the listener in by giving substance to their lyrics. Many of the tracks deal with serious issues in life and the fact that the world is unfair and has a penchant for kicking people when they’re down. With a knack for writing upbeat music with pensive and serious lyrics, AM Syndicate seem to be on the right track for success.
