n Paul was born Aug. 20, 1935, in Pittsburgh, Penn.
Education
n Paul received his B.A. from Gettysburg College in 1957, and his M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine in 1961.
Pre-governing career
n Paul served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1965 and served the U.S. National Guard from 1965 to 1968. Paul then worked as a physician specializing in obstetrics from 1968 to 1996 during which time he says he delivered more than 4,000 babies. He also worked as a distinguished counselor to the Ludwig von Mises Institute.
Governing career
n Paul served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 22nd District of Texas from 1979 to 1985 and in the 14th District of Texas from 1997 to present. He worked on the House Banking Committee as an advocate for sound monetary policy, and a critic of the Federal Reserve’s inflation. He voted to lower taxes spending and regulation, voted against the Iraq war and PATRIOT Act. In 1988, he ran for president for the Libertarian Party.

n Paul declared presidential candidacy on March 12, 2007.
Family life
n Paul and his wife Carol have been married for 50 years. They have five children and 17 grandchildren.
