Fallon Johnson, a former ISU softball student-athlete, was killed Thursday morning in a one-car accident in Ames.

At 5:12 a.m., the Ames Police Department was notified of an accident on 13th Street. When officers arrived, they found Johnson unconscious. It appeared she had struck a light pole on the north side of the road, according to a police press release.

The press release did not identify the victim, but a release from the ISU athletic department did. The Ames Police declined to comment on the identity of the victim.

Johnson was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, where she later died of injuries from the accident.

Softball coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler said in the press release from the athletic department that “Fallon was an awesome person, great player and unbelievable asset to our program. She recently took a job in Ames working with children. Fallon was one of those people who was always smiling and sacrificing for others. It’s an extremely sad day for the Cyclone softball family and the tragic loss of this truly wonderful young woman is hard to accept.”

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Johnson, a 22-year-old from Sacramento, Calif., graduated in August with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

She was a four-time letterwinner as an outfielder and played in 198 games during her career, ranking third in school history. Johnson also had 26 stolen bases.
