Volleyball team swept by Kansas State
October 11, 2007
The largest home crowd of the season wasn’t enough to propel the ISU volleyball team to victory Saturday night.
The Cyclones struggled on offense all night as 2,157 fans watched them fall 3-0 (24-30, 25-30, 27-30) to No. 16 Kansas State.
The serving game gave Iowa State fits all night. The Wildcats aced the Cyclones 10 times, the most Iowa State has given up all year. Iowa State didn’t help its own cause, hitting seven serves either into the net or out of bounds.
Game one was an offensive nightmare for the Cyclones. They hit just .140 as a team and never really got into any kind of rhythm. Jen Malcom was the lone bright spot, coming up with four kills on just seven attempts, but she didn’t get enough help from her teammates as Kansas State pulled away for the 30-24 win
It didn’t get much better in game two. Again Iowa State struggled on offense, hitting a marginally better .185. As it has been all season, the defense was stellar and the only thing that kept the game close. Iowa State racked up 30 digs in the second game, and three Cyclones reached double figures in digs by the intermission.
The third game was much more hotly contested. Iowa State finally started to get on track on offense, hitting .324, but in the end the defense couldn’t come up with enough big digs, coming up with only nine in the game.
The Cyclones struggled with stopping 6-foot, 3-inch Nataly Korobkova. The Russian right-side hitter put away 18 kills on the night.
Iowa State had only two players reach double-digit kills – Lauren Cummings and Jen Malcom with 13 and 12 respectively. On defense, four Cyclones recorded 10 or more digs, led by freshman libero Ashley Mass’s 18.
