Lisa Koll made history for the ISU women’s cross country Friday at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas.
Koll, the junior from Fort Dodge, ran a time of 20 minutes, 11.15 seconds in the 6,000-meter race to finish third – the highest finish in ISU women’s cross country history, surpassing Kelly Brinkman’s fourth-place finish in 2000.
“Lisa had a great day. She went after it and executed well,” coach Corey Ihmels said in a press release. “[Friday] she ran against top-notch, fast company, but she ran with great poise and had a great race.”
The women earned 175 points for seventh in the conference, their highest finish since 2000. Grace Kemmey helped the cause with a fifth-place finish and a time of 20:32.25, marking the first time two Cyclone runners earned top-five finishes at the same conference meet.
Colorado won the women’s championship with 59 points.
The ISU men’s cross country team earned their first top-five finish in 10 years, taking fourth with 139 points.
Six runners placed in the top 50 for the 8,000, led by freshman Hillary Bor’s 19th-place finish. Rounding out the top 50 for the Cyclones was Kiel Uhl in 26th, Kevin Born in 27th, Jayden Russ in 33rd, Guor Majak in 34th and Ben Murphy-Baum in 49th.
Colorado also won the men’s championship with 34 points.
“The men had an OK day, but we didn’t perform our best,” Ihmels said. “We finished fourth in the conference, but that just shows how great of a team we can be.”
Iowa State will get that chance again when they head to NCAA Regionals on Nov. 10 at Peoria, Ill.
Ihmels was pleased with the overall performance of both the men’s and women’s teams.
“Each team made progress today,” he said.
