After a hard-fought, 90-minute scoreless battle with the No. 16 Missouri Tigers on Friday night, freshman Jordan Bishop took it upon herself to finish the job, and that is exactly what she did.

Just two minutes into the first overtime, Bishop was able to win a ball just outside the 18-yard box and fire it into the back of the net past Missouri goalkeeper Tasha Dittamore.

The goal not only gave the Cyclones (8-6-3, 4-4-1 Big 12) a 1-0 victory over a nationally ranked team, but it propelled the Cyclones into the Big 12 Tournament for the first time since 2005.

Coach Rebecca Hornbacher said the team’s win over the Tigers was impressive given both the No. 16 ranking of Missouri and the fact that Iowa State had not won a conference game on the road entering the matchup.

“Missouri is a talented team,” Hornbacher said. “We just kept on going at them and overall, defensively, we were very solid. We told [the team] right before overtime that it was going to take a half chance or a chance to get a shot off. Jordan Bishop took that chance and she put it away with an exclamation point. Overall, I’m really proud of our team’s desire and determination. They left it all on the field.”

It was the second straight game in which Bishop, who last week was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, has netted the game-winner for the Cyclones. She scored the second goal in the team’s final home game, a 3-1 victory over Baylor.

The win was also significant because it was the first time that Missouri had been shut out in 17 matches, a streak dating back to last year.

Goalkeeper Ann Gleason made seven saves for the Cyclones in recording her sixth shutout of the year.

Only a sophomore, she is just one shutout shy of tying both the single-season and all-time ISU records.

On Sunday, the Cyclones missed an opportunity to earn more points, dropping a 1-0 decision to Kansas. Iowa State was outshot 12-6 in the game. Katie Williams scored the only goal for the Jayhawks.

With one game remaining on the schedule, Iowa State can move as high as a No. 5 seed in the conference tournament if it is able to secure a win Friday against Nebraska in Lincoln. The Cyclones are currently tied for seventh with Oklahoma State. They hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with OSU.
