COMMENTARY: Fall fashion all about adding it on

Amanda Molitor

Fall is here, and students are changing clothing styles as quickly as the changing weather. From skirts to accessories, here are some easy ways to transform your wardrobe from summer to fall.

Colors

Fall calls for cooler colors than summertime, and jewel tones such as sapphire and amethyst are very popular this season.

Taking your favorite jean skirt and pairing it with a jewel-toned, long-sleeved sweater instantly updates your outfit for fall.

Layering

“Adding on is really important for the fall,” said Katie Dosen, sophomore in apparel merchandising, design and production. “By layering your outfits, it is possible to stay warm on breezy days and still look good walking on campus.”

Layering is as simple as putting a long-sleeved sweater under a loose shirt in a contrasting color. It’s important to make sure the undershirt is tighter than the shirt on top so you don’t look frumpy.

Another simple way to layer is to pair skinny jeans, which have been popular for many seasons, with a chunky, oversized knit. This ensemble is perfect for running errands or chilling at a friend’s house and replaces the standard sweatshirt.

Leggings/tights

Leggings and tights are a great way to layer your lower half. Besides staying warm, this trend offers a way to dress up any outfit.

Leggings and footless tights are a great carryover from summer, and are wonderful when you need to pull something on before class or under a dress for the weekend.

Opaque tights are a much dressier way to stay warm in the fall. Whether it’s going to a job interview or out on a date, tights come in many colors and a look great with heels.

Shoes

Shoes become even more important as the weather grows colder. Ballet flats offer a stylish change, keep toes warm and are dressier than wearing flip-flops to class or out on the weekend.

Boots are another footwear trend for fall. Knee-high boots are great to add to a long skirt and still keep your legs warm.

The newest trend in boots is the bootie, a small boot with a thin heel. Booties can be worn with tights and a short skirt to a club or with a long skirt to a nice dinner.

Accessories

This fall, accessories are made to keep you both warm and stylish.

“Hats are a good accessory for fall,” said Abby Bailey, sophomore in pre-journalism and mass communication.

Fedoras and cloches (form-fitting knit hats) are perfect for keeping hair in place during windy days.

Another accessory that stretches from fall into winter are gloves. Short, leather gloves in bright colors spice up any black outfit and keep rings from falling off cold fingers.
