Panthers shut down Cyclones 24-13
September 6, 2007
Iowa State became the latest Football Bowl Subdivision team to fall to a Football Championship Subdivision (formerly known as 1-AA) team Saturday night.
In-state rival Northern Iowa knocked off the Cyclones, 24-13 — the first time Northern Iowa has defeated Iowa State since 1994, when the Panthers won 28-14 in Ames.
Eric Sanders sparked the Panthers with 23-of-29 passing for 189 yards while running back Corey Lewis added 127 yards on the ground.
Austin Arnaud saw the first action of his ISU career, spelling quarterback Bret Meyer for a series in the third quarter.
Arnaud was two-of-four passing for 15 yards, and he rushed once for four yards.
Marquis Hamilton had a big day receiving, catching seven balls for 97 yards — both career highs — but it wasn’t enough for a Cyclones offense that had trouble finding the end zone.
The Cyclones did outgain the Panthers on offense, but three turnovers, two inside Panthers’ territory and one that gave the Panthers the ball on the Cyclones’ 15-yard line, proved costly in the end.
Iowa State appeared in control of the game early, until Zac Sandvig fumbled a punt that Northern Iowa recovered 15 yards from pay dirt in the first quarter. The Panthers would score to take a 10-6 lead, and on their next possession would run a time-consuming touchdown scoring drive to make it 17-6. The drive swung the momentum in the
Panthers’ favor who would build a 24-6 lead that would not be seriously threatened by the Cyclones. Iowa State would add a fourth quarter score on a Jamicah Bass 1-yard touchdown run.
