Top 5 games in the series
September 14, 2007
1. 2002 in Iowa City – Iowa State 36, Iowa 31 – Although Seneca Wallace is remembered for “The Run” against Texas Tech, his shining moment may have been in Iowa City a few weeks before that. With the Cyclones down 24-7 at halftime, Wallace led the Cyclones on a furious comeback, throwing for a pair of touchdowns and running for one as well. The opportunistic Cyclone defense forced a pair of Brad Banks fumbles, handing the Orange Bowl bound Hawkeyes their only regular season loss.
2. 1998 in Iowa City – Iowa State 27, Iowa 9 – This game wasn’t the closest game in the history of the rivalry, but is on the list because of the fact the Cyclones broke the Hawkeyes’ 15-year stronghold on the Cy-Hawk Trophy. Iowa State led wire-to-wire and held Iowa to just 42 yards rushing in the game. Running back Darren Davis, who accomplished something his brother Troy did not do by beating the Hawkeyes, ran for 244 yards and a score to help the Cyclones beat Iowa for the first time since 1982.
3. 2005 in Ames – Iowa State 23, Iowa 3 – Like 1998, this game is on the list not because of a heart-stopping finish, but because of the circumstances. With Iowa coming in rated eighth in the country, the Hawkeyes were favored by double digits, even with the game being in Ames. The Cyclones used a spirited defensive effort to get the win, forcing five turnovers, scoring once, and knocking Iowa quarterback Drew Tate out of the game in the second quarter.
4. 1977 in Iowa City – Iowa 12, Iowa State 10 – Even though the Cyclones did not get the victory in this affair, this great game marked a new beginning in the rivalry. The two teams have met every year since 1977 and have battled for the Cy-Hawk Trophy, but before that infamous year, the two teams had not met since the year 1934.
5. 2001 in Ames – Iowa State 17, Iowa 14 – Moved back to Nov. 24 because of the Sept. 11 attacks, this was the latest in the season this annual game was ever played. Wallace, who did not lose to the Hawkeyes in his two years at Iowa State, threw for 228 yards and a touchdown in the Cyclones three-point victory. The game was still in doubt until redshirt freshman kicker Tony Yelk hit a 32-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter.
