Pepsi vs. Coke: Students sounds off

Pepsi has won another battle in the ongoing competition between itself and Coca-Cola on the ISU campus this fall.

ISU Dining switched to Pepsi products in August after their contract with Coca-Cola expired this summer. Coke will still be available around campus, but only in bottle form.

Nancy Levandowski, director of ISU Dining, said the decision was a challenging one.

“The decision was hard because we never want to be completely exclusive. We always want students to have different choices,” Levandowski said.

When Coca-Cola’s contract expired this summer, it was decided that the change to Pepsi would not only add to the diversity of products being sold on campus, but also save money that could be used for marketing and student promotions.

“When you compare the two [Pepsi and Coca-Cola], there’s a $23,000 difference, but prices did go up,” Levandowski said. “What I got from this was 10,000 mugs that we’re going to be giving out to students; also there’s some marketing dollars from things that we’re getting and so much fountain beverage that we can give away.”

Students will now be able to get Pepsi products from the soda fountains at ISU Dining facilities, but will also be able to buy Coca-Cola products in bottled form.

Student reactions to the switch have been mixed.

“I like it better. I like Pepsi better than Coke. We just want caffeine,” said Evan Summy, freshman in pre-business.

Some students were not even aware of the switch from Coca-Cola products to Pepsi.

“I didn’t even notice. I don’t think people even pay attention to what it is,” said Jamilee Lightfoot, sophomore in pre-journalism and mass communication.

Other students didn’t have an opinion on the change.

“I don’t even drink pop,” said Shaylyn Wiarda, sophomore in biology.
