Hobbs speaks about NFL record
September 13, 2007
Former ISU cornerback hit the highlight reels this week. The 2004 alumnus returned a kickoff for 108 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the New York Jets, setting an NFL record for a kickoff and tying the record for longest play.
“I didn’t even think about kneeling the ball,” Hobbs said after the game in an interview with The Associated Press. “We’re taking them all out. They pay me to make plays. They don’t pay me to take knees. This isn’t college. This isn’t high school. We’re in the NFL. They pay me to return the ball and guys in front of me to block. Why not give them something to celebrate and enjoy?”
Hobbs, who wore an ISU hat during an interview aired on ESPN, is in his third season in the NFL with the New England Patriots. The former Cyclone returned 24 kickoffs for 490 yards in his collegiate career.
Hobbs’ record breaks the previous record of 106 yards held by three players: Green Bay’s Al Carmichael, Kansas City’s Nolan Smith, and the St. Louis Cardinals’ Roy Green.
