Cyclone volleyball splits weekend matches in Tempe
September 3, 2007
Maybe a little fun in the sun is all the ISU volleyball team needed.
Playing in the Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Challenge in Tempe, Ariz., the Cyclones recorded their first wins of the season, going 2-2 over the weekend.
Iowa State (2-4 overall) won its opening match against Northern Arizona before dropping its next two to New Mexico and Arizona State. The Cyclones ended the weekend with a victory over Long Island.
After struggling offensively in its first two matches of the season, Iowa State finally started to find a rhythm. Six Cyclones recorded double figures in kills in at least one match, including career-highs of 16 for Victoria Henson and 11 for Mary Bisenius.
An even brighter note for the Cyclones was outside hitter Erin Boeve finally starting to get on track. The senior was named to the All-Tournament team after tallying double-figure kills in each match. Her 28 kills against Arizona State matched a career high.
The team’s offensive breakthrough may coincide with the return of setter Kaylee Manns.
Manns was out for the first three matches of the year after she was suspended for an off-season OWI arrest.
She averaged 47.3 assists per match, including 62 in the loss to Arizona State.
She chipped in defensively too, racking up 26 digs over the weekend.
Ending the weekend on a win could give the team momentum as it heads into Wednesday’s 7 p.m. match with in-state rival Northern Iowa.
