Soccer team upsets No. 16 Oklahoma State 3-0
September 27, 2007
The Big 12 regular season got off to an exciting start Friday, as the Iowa State Cyclones (5-1-2) earned a 3-0 win over the No. 16 Oklahoma State Cowgirls (6-2-1) at the ISU Soccer Complex, making history along the way.
The win over the Cowgirls is the highest-ranked team Iowa State has defeated in its 12-year existence. The previous high came in 2005, when the Cyclones beat then No. 18 Texas A&M, 1-0.
The victory also gave coach Rebecca Hornbacher her 42nd win at Iowa State, vaulting her past Cathy Klein into first-place on ISU’s all-time career wins list.
Despite being out shot 18-11 and surrendering nine corner kicks to the Cowgirls, Iowa State displayed a bend-but-don’t-break defense in the effort.
Senior midfielder Stephanie Kaphingst opened the scoring for the Cyclones, taking a blast from outside the goal box and netting it in the top left corner in the 39th minute to send her team into the locker room up 1-0.
Shortly after the break, midfielder Elise Reid connected on a pass from midfielder Casey Bothwell and rolled the ball past Oklahoma State goalie Erin Stigler to make it 2-0.
The last tally came on a nice finish by freshman midfielder Jordan Bishop, knocking it off the far post and in to move the advantage to 3-0.
Cyclone goalkeeper Ann Gleason made six saves in the win while earning her fourth shutout of the season.
Next up for Iowa State is another home date Sunday against Oklahoma (4-3-2), who were defeated 1-0 at the hands of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. Friday night. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the ISU Soccer Complex.
