Greeks plan charity barbecue
September 6, 2007
Several chapters from the greek community have stepped forward to help alleviate costs from the fire damage to the Alpha Chi Omega house.
Kappa Alpha Theta, Phi Kappa Psi, Beta Sigma Psi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Kappa Kappa Gamma will host a barbecue party from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday on the front lawn of Phi Kappa Psi, which is located on Lynn Avenue.
Admission price will be $5 and all proceeds will be donated to Alpha Chi Omega.
The cover charge will provide attendees with a barbecue lunch as well as lawn games, including volleyball and a Slip ‘n Slide.
Sponsors of the event said they welcome anybody within the Ames and ISU community to come support the cause.
“Everybody on our block is coming, but we’re hoping it can be a universitywide event,” said Kimberly Kiraly, president of Kappa Alpha Theta and senior in family and consumer science education and studies.
“It’s everybody that wants to come – it’s definitely not restricted.”
The hosts expect approximately 400 to 500 attendees, but are prepared for more.
“We’ll have a good turnout since the money is going to Alpha Chi Omega,” said Kiel Opperman, member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and senior in psychology.
The chapters advertised by means of a Facebook group. As of Thursday afternoon, the group had more than 300 confirmed guests, and almost 500 potential guests.
The chapters also advertised through dinner announcements in the greek community.
They also plan to post fliers and chalk the sidewalk, said Kevin Murphy, member of Beta Sigma Psi and senior in history.
“It was just kind of spur of the moment,” Murphy said. “We thought it’d be neat if we could get all the houses to pull together and pull off the event. It should be a lot of fun.”
The group came together and decided they wanted to promote the cause soon after the fire that occurred in the Alpha Chi Omega house.
The fire originated in one of the rooms located on the second floor before formal recruitment week for sororities. In addition to the immediate fire damage to the room, smoke damage also has added to the cost of repairs.
The Alpha Chi Omega house has already received donations from various benefactors, said Katie Wolf, member of Alpha Chi Omega and junior in kinesiology.
“It’s amazing,” Wolf said. “We couldn’t ask for anything more.”
