DMB could crash into Iowa State

Fresh off the victory of Cy in the CBS Sportline’s Most Dominant College Mascot on Earth, ISU students have another online challenge, this time in the form of a band competition.

On Sept. 1, www.attblueroom.com opened voting in the World’s Loudest Pep Rally Contest. The contest, which is open to 100 colleges across the country, will award a concert featuring the Dave Matthews Band to the school that submits the most votes, in the form of invitations, to the band.

Mitchell Christenson, sophomore in pre-business, is a big fan of the Dave Matthews Band.

“I’ve been to 16 [Dave Matthews Band] shows,” he said. “I’ve been a fan for forever, practically.”

Christenson first heard about the concert through a Dave Matthews Band fan site. As a fan of the band, he immediately felt the need to start getting the word out.

“The first thing I knew was to go to Facebook,” he said.

Christenson’s group, “Iowa State Dave Matthews Band contest please participate for free concert,” currently has more than 2,000 members and is continuing to grow.

Nicholas Weir, freshman in hotel, restaurant/institution management, has been interested in the band for about seven years. He and his friends are in a band, and he said the Dave Matthews Band is one of their influences.

“I just love their style of music,” he said.

Weir said he has voted approximately 150 times so far, and is encouraging his friends to do so as well.

“I added all my friends on Facebook to the group,” he said. “I think we’re going to win it.”

For the first few days of voting, Iowa State held on to first place. When the University of Iowa moved up to second place, the close competition sparked rivalry not unlike that between sports fans at an Iowa vs. Iowa State game.

“It’s kind of like another Cy-Hawk rivalry going on,” said Benjamin Power, sophomore in pre-business.

Power said that while he hopes Iowa State wins the contest, he would prefer it stay in the state rather than go to a school that’s much further away.

If the concert did go to Iowa, Power said he would still be likely to attend.

“I wouldn’t like it, but I’d probably go,” he said.

Emily White, freshman in chemical engineering, is also doing her part to bring the band to Iowa State.

“I’ve done the 50 votes a day since Saturday,” she said. “I think it’d be really awesome if they came to Iowa State.”

According to a press release from www.att.com, the college that submits the most winning invitations will win a free, fully produced concert featuring the Dave Matthews Band during the week of Nov. 12.

As of Thursday afternoon, Iowa State was in second place behind the U.S. Military Academy, while Iowa remained behind Iowa State in third place.
