State Capitol evacuated

DES MOINES — The Capitol was evacuated Thursday morning after construction crews reported problems with a high voltage electrical transformer, officials said.
About 200 state workers were evacuated to nearby state office buildings as officials assessed the problem, said Deb Madison-Levy, a spokeswoman with the Iowa Department of Administrative Services.
She said the problem may have involved a transformer that was arching.
Jim Saunders, spokesman for the Iowa Department of Public Safety, said power to the Capitol and the nearby Wallace office building was shut down while officials assessed the situation.
No fire was reported, he said.
David Miller, administrator of the Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division, said the evacuation was a precaution since the problem was located in a high voltage power line outside the building that feeds the Capitol.
The Wallace Building, which houses the departments of agriculture and natural resources, was safe to be in, but power was cut that building as well, Miller said.
He said it was not immediately clear what caused the electrical problem.
