DAVENPORT — A Davenport alderman is accused of violating state law by leaking confidential information about efforts to lure an Illinois business to Davenport.
Keith Meyer was reprimanded by the mayor this week after a city investigation showed he allegedly tried to derail a deal with eServ, an engineering-consulting firm in Rock Island, Ill.
The company has been in private negotiations with city officials regarding a possible relocation to Davenport, which would include considerable incentives and a multimillion-dollar construction project that could create hundreds of jobs.
City Administrator Craig Malin said Meyer leaked information of the project to the media and Rock Island officials because he opposed offering incentives to the company.
“One reason for his opposition . was salaries for the positions were relatively high and Alderman Meyer was of the opinion that eServ employees would not choose to live in Davenport,” Malin wrote in a five-page investigation report issued this week.
The city’s investigation included a surveillance video from City Hall showing Meyer copying a large quantity of documents. It also includes copies of e-mail correspondence with a reporter in Rock Island.
