The ghosts of People’s past
July 16, 2007
The feeling of being watched looms everywhere as construction workers work feverishly for the grand opening of Papa Lou’s Bar and Grill. Papa Lou’s resides in the 101-year-old Champlin Building, 2430 Lincoln Way, the oldest building in Campustown.
“One of the very first times I walked into this building, when I moved here in the ’70s, I went into the ballroom and I just remember thinking it sounds trite, sort of ghosts of the past,” said Lynn Champlin Lloyd, owner of the building. “It was a very strong feeling, very positive, very happy feeling.”
Project manager Waleigh LePon said he also feels like he is being watched while he works.
“Everybody that comes in here or has worked here feels like there’s somebody that just walks past you,” LePon said.
LePon said he’s never felt anything like it in his 35 years of working construction.
“I think it might be we disturbed all of the good memories that were trapped in this building,” LePon said.
LePon recently started taking pictures of the construction progress when he noticed something he thought was strange.
“I thought there must be a dirty lens or something because there are all these circles in my pictures, almost all of them,” LePon said. “I didn’t think much of it and then I started showing people and they said they were orbs.”
Lloyd said the “orbs” were flowing out of the old ballroom floor when they first removed it.
LePon said the “orbs” could only be seen in pictures and were not detectable by the naked eye.
“The more pictures I took, the more I’d see them,” LePon said. “So, I’m somewhat becoming a believer.”
Lloyd said she wasn’t a believer either until she took some pictures.
“I didn’t believe it, so I said, ‘Let’s go upstairs and take a picture,'” Lloyd said. “So we did and sure enough there they were.”
The Champlin Building has been the location for People’s Bar and Grill for the last 18 years. The upstairs of the building was originally a ballroom, but has been vacant for the last 60 years.
“This was a ballroom for the first 40 years,” LePon said. “Every kind of event happened up there and all kinds of people came through this building – thousands of people, with basically happy good memories, some of the best of their lives.”
Lloyd said the old ballroom will hopefully be used again someday. She said once Papa Lou’s generates some money, they will look into renovating the upstairs.
