Be in style for summer and fall
June 20, 2007
Just because Ames isn’t a fashion hot spot, it doesn’t mean you can’t stay in style this summer and upcoming fall.
Women
Clothing
Emily Plummer, assistant manager of American Eagle in North Grand Mall, 2801 Grand Ave., said the baby doll and empire waist are really big for dresses this summer.
Accessories are simple, such as wooden bangles and chain necklaces.
“For girls, it’s all about the simple look. It’s easy and fun and fast,” Plummer said. “Throw on your dress, throw on your flip-flops, throw on your necklace and that’s your outfit.”
Seana Rice, manager of The Buckle in North Grand Mall, had suggestions for carrying some of the summer trends into fall.
“Plaid shorts are in, and the Bermudas with a taller boot for the fall,” Rice said.
Hair
Angie Frerichs, stylist at Regis Salons in North Grand Mall, said hair with a lot of texture and layers is in for summer.
Try to go for natural-looking curls instead of an overdone look, Frerichs said.
“Flat iron curls are the way to go. Ribbon curl it with a flat iron. If you have naturally curly or wavy hair, diffuse it,” she said.
Frerichs said natural effects for hair color are in, such as coloring pieces or chunks of hair to add movement.
Makeup
Janet Hamer, Clinque consultant at Younkers in North Grand Mall and ISU alumna, said the look this fall is more about a dramatic eye and less about a dramatic lip.
Amanda Steines, Clinque consultant and sophomore in apparel merchandising, design and production, said to expect turquoise and more dramatic eye colors for fall.
Nails
Frerichs said light nail polish shades, such as flat pinks, pastels and whites, are stylish for summer, along with dark colors.
“Once we get into fall, [dark colors] will come back,” Frerichs said.
Frerichs said for fall colors will be extreme, being either very dark or very light.
Handbags
Cathi Fakih, co-owner of Lala Bags, 2408 Lincoln Way, said white is a big color for purses this summer, along with light colors.
“We sold out of everything white and yellow,” Fakih said.
She said Juicy Couture bags in bright and metallic colors have been big sellers too.
Big bags will continue to be popular summer into fall and bags will have longer straps, coming from the hippie look, for fall, she said.
“Burberry is going to be very big this fall,” she said.
Shoes
Ben Butler, manager of Journeys in North Grand Mall, said slip-ons are in style for women.
“Keds came out with a bunch of new stuff,” Bulter said. “The animal prints with elephants and camels have been really popular for us for summertime.”
Bulter said new lines of flip-flops are some of the picks this season.
Men
Clothing
Plummer suggested patterned or brightly-colored woven oxford button downs and flip-flops for guys.
“For guys, it’s all about casual. A pair of shorts and a T-shirt,” Plummer said.
Rice said sunglasses and slip-on shoes – whether tennis or a dressier style – are in for men’s styles.
The lighter-wash jean is popular for summer, but will go to a darker-wash for fall, Rice said.
Todd Luna, manger of Pac Sun in North Grand Mall, said plaid shorts for guys have been incredibly popular this summer.
“Anything with an all-over print is pretty in style,” Luna said of T-shirt trends.
Shoes
Bulter said men’s shoes are in bright colors, such as orange and green, this season.
“Vans have taken off a lot this year for guys. A lot of plaids and a lot of old school stuff is coming back,” Bulter said of high-top shoes.
Bulter said summer shoe trends will continue into fall for back to school.
Hair
Guys can keep it simple for summer by having a short cut.
“Guys are going really short on the sides now,” Frerichs said. “A few highlights are always fun for guys.”

Facial care
The summer heat can definitely take its toll on your skin – especially your face – so it’s important to take care of it.
Clinque offers a three-step facial cleaning line along with accessories such as moisturizers for the skin, lips and eyes, facial oil controllers and shaving gel and cream.
“It’s really easy. It’s just twice a day, it only takes three minutes,” Hamer said. “It helps to take care of the oiliness and dryness.”
A men’s concealer is coming out soon, Hamer said.
Eyewear
Laura Jackman, optician at Vista Vision in North Grand Mall, said color is popular for glasses, ranging from green to purple to stripped patterns.
“Right now the big thing is little lenses. A lot of people are going either with the completely frameless or the plastic,” Jackman said.
