Men’s Cross Country
Coach: Corey Ihmels
When: September through November
Where: ISU Cross Country Course located by Towers Residence Halls
Junior Kiel Uhl, who placed 121st at the NCAA Championships, led the men’s cross country team to fifth-place finishes at Regional and the Big 12 Championships. The Cyclones only lose one runner off of this year’s team.
Women’s Cross Country
Coach: Dick Lee
When: September through November
Where: ISU Cross Country Course located by Towers Residence Halls
Junior Lisa Koll finished 36th at the NCAA Championships along with leading the team throughout the year and will return to lead the team this coming season.
Men’s Basketball
Coach: Greg McDermott
When: November through March
Where: Hilton Coliseum
Men’s basketball struggled this year and went 15-16, but the expectations are up for next season. McDermott has brought in an outstanding eight-man recruiting class, which includes star player Craig Brackins.
Women’s Basketball
Coach: Bill Fennelly
When: November through March
Where: Hilton Coliseum
The women’s basketball team finished 26-9 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where it lost to Georgia. The Cyclones will return many of the players from that team, as well as two incoming players, one of which is Ms. Basketball in Iowa, Kelsey Bolte.
Wrestling
Coach: Cael Sanderson
When: November through March
Where: Hilton Coliseum
The ISU wrestling team finished just short of NCAA Championship this past season and returns national runner-up sophomore Jacob Varner. The Cyclones also have several newcomers, who will look to make an impact in the open weight classes.
Swimming and Diving
Coach: Duane Sorenson
When: October through March
Where: Beyer Hall Pool
The swimming and diving team is coming off a season where they set several school records in a sixth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships. The Cyclones return two all-conference performers, freshman Abby Glaser and sophomore Haley Haynes, and also have eight recruits that will join the team.
Gymnastics
Coach: Jay Ronayne
When: January through April
Where: Hilton Coliseum
The gymnastics team just finished its season with a third-place finish at Regionals, despite all the changes the program has gone through. With a new coach and several new athletes, the team actually finished in a tie for second but lost on a tiebreaker.
Men’s Track and Field
Coach: Steve Lynn
When: December through June
Where: Lied Recreation Athletic Center
The men’s track and field team had many strong finishes at one of the nation’s most prestigious meets, the Drake Relays, a couple of weeks after its 10th-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 1,600-meter relay.
Women’s Track and Field
Coach: Dick Lee
When: December through June
Where: Lied Recreation Athletic Center
The ISU women’s track and field team also had strong finishes at Drake after two of their athletes finished in the top 12 at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Junior Lisa Koll finished 12th in the 5,000-meter run and senior Agota Kosuda finished 10th in the triple jump at the Indoor Championships. Koll won the 10,000 meter run at the Big XII outdoor championships in Lincoln, Neb.
Men’s Golf
Coach: Jay Horton
When: September through May
Where: Veenker Memorial Golf Course
The men’s golf earned two tournament victories so far this season and has had several other high finishes going into the Big 12 Championships.
Softball
Coach: Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler
When: September; February through May
Where: Southwest Athletic Complex
The softball team is 22-31 and 1-7 in the Big 12. Freshman Alex Johnson led with a .321 batting average.
