What you need to know for freshman year
June 4, 2007
Coming to college is a scary experience. Weird people are everywhere, mom’s not doing your laundry anymore and you now sleep on a bunk bed. With all these changes going on, it is time to round up a little information to help make a smooth transition.
Residence halls
Have a question about policies or regulations? Need some advice? Roommate bothering you beyond belief? Each house has a community assistant, who is an undergraduate, live-in student staff member. Your CA will be there from day one to answer any questions you might have about your living situation.
To speak with someone at the Department of Residence, contact 294-2900 or (800) 854-9050, e-mail at [email protected] or stop by 2419 Friley Hall.
Information technology
If your computer is acting up, or even if you have a simple question about installing a new program, the Solution Center is here to help. Located at 195 Durham Center, its mission is to assist all ISU students with supported computer software, networking and service issues. E-mail the support staff at [email protected] or call 294-4000.
Greek affairs
Interested in going greek? The greek community welcomes you with open arms. For men, contact [email protected] or call the office of Greek Affairs 294-2977. For women, contact recruitment chairs Brook S. or Tara D. at [email protected]. For more information about the greek opportunities available to you, visit www.greek.iastate.edu.
Intramurals/clubs
If you like to play sports, ISU Recreation Services invites you to play along. With more than 50 different intramural sports to play, there is “something for everyone,” including slow pitch softball, basketball, bowling and euchre. For those who would like to compete at a specialized level of competition, there are 40 sport clubs to join at Iowa State with anything from rugby and soccer to scuba diving and rodeo.
For general information, contact 294-4980, and you will be pointed in the right direction for whatever you wish to play.
Student health
Feeling a little queasy? Having a hard time shaking that cold? All registered students are eligible for services from the Thielen Student Health Center, which provides general medicine care, a full-service pharmacy and women’s health issues, among others.
The ISU Wellness Center, located on the second floor, offers assistance with free fitness testing, time – and stress -management workshops, smoking cessation programs and other specialty services. For more information, to make an appointment or to speak with a resource nurse, contact 294-5801.
Government of the Student Body
Want a change? If you see something on campus that really bothers you and you have ideas for change, contact your Government of the Student Body senator. The senate is a group of students who represent you by each college and living area. To make your voice heard, find your senator by visiting www.gsb.iastate.edu/senate, or come to a meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the Memorial Union.
