Summer at the Workspace
June 4, 2007
Summer is in full swing and it is the perfect time to bring out your inner artist.
The Workspace in the Memorial Union offers diverse art classes and workshops with popular classes such as sewing, along with new classes, such as the sock monkeys class.
The Workspace is a fully equipped, multimedia studio and is the area’s only pay-by-the-day studio for working on your own. The Workspace offers classes in clay, fiber, photography, wood, glass and jewelry, among others.
Letitia Kenemer, program coordinator of the Memorial Union, encourages students to come check it out.
“We have a lot of new classes; people should take a second look,” Kenemer said.
Classes at the Workspace are geared toward beginners and people with a wide range of skills.
“It’s a great stress reliever,” Kenemer said. “You don’t have to be a great artist.”
Students will learn to sew a garment they’ve always wanted in the “Knock it Off” class, by bringing in a picture of the garment or accessory geared to their sewing abilities.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own sewing machine if they have one, otherwise there are three sewing machines available to reserve when registering. All pattern material is provided.
In the “Sock Monkeys” class, participants learn how to make a sock into anything they want to.
“Sock monkeys sound really cool; they’re whimsical and cuddly,” said Laura Miller, sophomore in mechanical engineering.
Keitha Anderson, alumna, is currently teaching a screen-printing class at the Workspace. Participants make their own designs and learn to make a screen with the photographic emulsion method. After taking this class they are allowed to use the screen-printing equipment on their own.
“Most of the people haven’t had a lot of experience, so it’s a great place for beginners,” Anderson said.
Anderson is also excited to teach the stone-setting class, because students will make a handmade pendant with sterling silver and gemstones. She enjoys teaching jewelry classes because she majored in metallurgy.
“The workspace is a pretty friendly place,” Anderson said.
Kate Brown, senior in fine arts, is teaching a black-and-white photography class and a pottery wheel class.
Brown said the photography class gives students the opportunity to learn skills they can use later on, such as taking pictures of family. She said the class has a different approach since it is black and white, and more thought is put into it.
“I’m mostly excited to be able to spread knowledge about pottery and photography,” Brown said. “Both medias we use daily and don’t recognize the work that goes into each. There’s a better understanding and appreciation for what they end up with.”
The black-and-white photography class is an introduction for beginners to photography with topics ranging from camera use and exposure control to darkroom procedures. Students should bring their own camera to the first class.
The Workspace also offers dance classes, such as belly dancing, which is taught by Lisa Rich-McKelvey, who has been practicing belly dancing since 1993.
“I’m particularly excited to teach the Saidi class because we will incorporate props, upbeat, earthy dance and I’m connected with that,” Rich-McKelvey said.
The Saidi dance is an energetic dance from Upper Egypt. “Shiara’s Sassy Saidi Class” is open to dancers of all skill levels and no prior experience is necessary.
The Workspace is located in the east basement of the Memorial Union.
Summer hours are 3 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
To register, stop by the Workspace during its open hours, mail the form with payment, or call 294-0970. Participants are encouraged to register early because space is limited.
The Workspace also has open studios for projects in ceramics, photography, woodworking and jewelry, among others. The woodshop orientation class is required if you want to use the woodshop on your own. The rates are $3 per day or $25 per semester for ISU students. Public rates are $4 per day or $30 per semester.
