GSB works hard to represent students

The Government of the Student Body is the student organization that represents students throughout the ISU campus.
“GSB is all about working with the university on behalf of students,” said Adam Krupicka, GSB speaker and graduate student in biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology.
Brian Phillips, GSB president and junior in political science, is the student representative to a number of different organizations.
“We are the student representatives to the university administration, to the city of Ames and to the state Legislature and Board of Regents,” he said.
Krupicka said the university really listens to GSB.
“The administration makes decisions based on the view of the student body through the Government of the Student Body,” he said.
GSB allocates $1.5 million in student fees to various causes, including social services around the community through the Analysis of Social Services Evaluation Team, as well as student legal services and others, Phillips said.
“We provide funding to hundreds of campus clubs and organizations throughout the year,” he said.
Krupicka said the most important thing GSB does is represent students, which goes beyond what happens in meetings, but also in the every day-to-day contact GSB has with the administrators throughout the university.
“I think that representation of the students and for the students is the biggest and most important thing,” he said.
Each student at Iowa State is a member of GSB, Phillips said. Meetings are open to all students and he encourages people to attend and voice their opinions or request funding. GSB is set up like a state or federal government, which includes a legislative, executive and judicial branch.
There are many ways students can get involved with GSB, including the different committees GSB appoints student representatives to, Phillips said.
“There are dozens and dozens of university committees and things, and if you’ve got some kind of special interest, I imagine that there is some kind of university committee out there for you,” he said.
For those students wanting to get involved with the GSB senate, Krupicka said to contact a senator or the GSB office.
“If you want to have a voice in where your money is going, then GSB is where to go,” he said.
