UPDATE: Softball eliminated from Big 12 championships
April 29, 2007
Senior Alyssa Ransom did everything in her power to extend her career one more game, but in the end it wasn’t enough.
The No. 10 ISU softball team suffered a heartbreaking elimination Friday in the first round of the Big 12 Championship with a 2-1 extra inning loss to No. 7 Kansas in Oklahoma City.
Ransom pitched 7 2/3 innings of one run softball, before surrendering a two out double to Stevie Crisosto and a walk to Elle Pottorf. On the final pitch of Ransom’s Cyclone career, Kansas pitcher Kassie Humphreys lined a single to left which brought in the game’s winning run.
The Cyclones drew first blood courtesy of an Alex Johnson fourth inning solo home run. The Jayhawks, however, answered right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Iowa State couldn’t provide any run support for Ransom, as the offense went dormant except for the home run from Johnson. Her blast was the only hit the Cyclones could manage off Humphreys, who struck out seven in eight innings of work.
Iowa State finishes the year at 24-40, and Ransom finishes her final season as a Cyclone with a 12-18 record. Kansas (33-23-1) faces No. 2 Oklahoma in the second round.
