A guide to Coliseum Carnage I

What is Mixed Martial Arts?

Mixed martial arts is one of the fastest growing sports in America and many people might not understand it. Here’s MMA explained in simple terms by many of those involved with Saturday’s “Coliseum Carnage 1” event:

“I’d describe [MMA] as a combination of wrestling, jiu-jitsu and muay thai kickboxing.” – Josh Neer, Des Moines-native and UFC veteran

“MMA is the toughest sport around. You can’t have any flaws in your game, and lately you got to have it all, otherwise you ain’t got nothing.” – Victor Moreno, Des Moines-native and IFL veteran

“It’s taking the best wrestlers and grapplers, standup fighters, best all-around fighters and putting their talents and abilities to the test.” – Troy Waller, promoter for this Saturday’s event

“It’s a tough sport. It needs hard work and dedication, especially if you’re just getting started. It’s a chance of a lifetime.” – Rudy Papakee, the only ISU student on the card and a senior in health and human performance.
