MTRACK: Shuttle runners keep winning streak alive
April 2, 2007
With four weeks left until the Drake Relays, which take place April 25-28, the shuttle hurdle relay team won its final warm-up run to remain undefeated in its last three races, a streak which started at last year’s Relays.
The team of Sterling Frison, Scott Lynn, Eric Parker and Kellen Burl won the Missouri Relays on Friday with a time of 58.34 seconds, backing up its win to open the outdoor season at the Walt Disney Invitational on March 24.
“After last year’s win at Drake, I had it set in my mind that I wanted to go undefeated at Drake in the shuttle in my full time here, so it would be awesome to go undefeated my whole time in the shuttle at Iowa State,” Parker said.
The time is sixth on Iowa State’s all-time performance list, and less than a second behind the team’s winning time at the Drake Relays last year. None of the remaining meets before the Relays will feature a shuttle hurdle event, so the team will have the next three-and-a-half weeks to train.
“We could definitely lower [our time],” Parker said. “We could be more aggressive on the exchanges. Three more weeks of training will make us that much better for Drake.”
The rest of the team that traveled to Missouri had to battle thunderstorms Saturday. The Cyclones were able to compete in some events, but had to leave before the completion of the meet. Coach Steve Lynn said while the bad weather hurt the Cyclones, it’s something any track team has to deal with.
“It’s just what outdoor track is,” Lynn said.
“It definitely hurts, because you’re trying to set the season up on where you’re going to run your races, and it kind of sets our training up. Now you have to adjust things.
“That’s just how it is with everybody, you get affected by the weather, and you just have to make adjustments as you go on.”
Runners who did get to race at Missouri include Burl and Frison, who took fifth and seventh in the 110-meter hurdles. Also, the 4×100-meter relay team of David Dawson, Elijah Braimah, Jared Graham and Jared Lewis finished fifth.
The distance runners traveled to the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Guor Majak highlighted the meet for the Cyclones, finishing 2nd in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 29:42.76, which Lynn expects him to improve upon in the upcoming weeks.
“A lot depends on the heat you are in, and he wasn’t in the heat we wanted him to be in,” Lynn said.
“He had to set the pace himself. It’s probably going to take around 29:10 to qualify for nationals, and I don’t think that’s out of reach for him.”
Elsewhere, Jayden Russ finished last in his section of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, but still hit a regional qualifying time of 9:4.17.
Next up for the Cyclones is the Texas Relays, which begin Wednesday.
A small number of runners will compete there, while the rest of the team will travel to Northern Iowa this weekend.
