ISU student continues success in the Octagon
April 29, 2007
For ISU student Rudy Papakee, this weekend was an opportunity to perform his favorite hobby at his school for the first time.
Papakee (5-0), senior in health and human performance, forced “Big Country” Dan Hutton (6-2) to tap out due to strikes early in the second round of their heavyweight fight during Saturday’s “Coliseum Carnage,” the first professional mixed martial arts event held in Ames.
“It’s a really good feeling to win [on Iowa State’s campus],” Papakee said. “[Being a student here] is one of the main reasons they called for me to fight. Go Cyclones.”
Broadcast live on the Internet by Fight Sport Global Network, the Extreme Contact Fighting event brought approximately 1,000 vocal fans to Hilton Coliseum to see Ultimate Fighting Championship veterans and Iowa natives compete in 15 fights.
“Overall it was a really good show,” Papakee said. “I think it was actually a pretty good turnout for the first event here at Hilton [Coliseum].”
The broadcast of the event can also be seen on Mediacom Connections Channel 22 in the near future.
