AMUSE: Plan ahead for moving out to avoid finals week stress
April 25, 2007
With the semester coming to a close, there is a lot to be done in little time. Whether you are moving back home for the summer, leaving Ames for good or just relocating, moving can be a stressful time. AMUSE provides some tips to make your move a little easier.
Plan ahead
Anything you can pack ahead of time will save you time when the big moving day comes.
“Planning ahead is the biggest thing,” said Doug Jansen of the Ames Moving Center, 232 S. Duff Ave.
Start early if you need a storage unit or moving vehicle. By reserving things ahead of time, you have your foot in the door and can always change plans if needed, Jansen said.
Make sure you have the necessary packing supplies such as bubble wrap and newspaper for packing breakables, and containers or boxes for packing. It is important to have the appropriate supplies in order to protect your valuables, Jansen said.
Packing your belongings
When packing, it is important to know the size and weight of your belongings. Use appropriately sized boxes for your things, and don’t overload the boxes. No box should be heavier than 50 pounds, depending on the person moving the boxes, Jansen said.
Stay organized
Staying organized goes along with planning ahead. This is key to making moving day less stressful. Label everything. Pack boxes or containers by room to make moving to your new place easier.
Throwing things away
Use moving time as a time to go through the things you may not need or use again. If you have any extra trash, contact your garbage service so they can accommodate your needs.
Waste Management, 210 Freel Drive, will pick up large items such as furniture, but there may be an extra charge. For students living in the dorms or greek houses, there are containers or designated areas set aside for large items.
Residence halls
As you prepare to move out of the dorms, the best way to avoid fines is to make sure everything is in its original condition.
“Leave your room the way you found it or better,” said Ben Raveling, senior in finance and community adviser in Welch Hall.
Once you have removed your personal belongings from the room, make sure everything is clean and in working order. When moving day comes, be as prepared and organized as you can be, as the dorms will be busy places.
Moving out is a good time to take advantage of your parents’ help, Raveling said. When it comes to trash, don’t be hesitant to throw away things you may longer need. Don’t forget to check out with your community adviser before you leave campus.
