Cyclones bow to elements, OSU
April 1, 2007
After having to sit out a weather delay and subsequent postponement Saturday, the ISU softball team struggled mightily with the cold temperature and a hot-hitting Oklahoma State team Sunday.
Cowgirls senior catcher Courtney Totte continued her outstanding hitting, going 5-7 with two home runs, five runs scored and eight runs batted in, leading OSU to a doubleheader sweep, 14-0 and 10-1 in five innings each, respectively.
The Cyclones (19-26, 0-4 Big 12), who were coming off of a doubleheader sweep of Northern Iowa and had won 10 of 16 games, had to battle wind gusts up to 30 mph, and their only run came in the fifth inning of the second game. The Cowgirls (23-19, 2-2 Big 12) dominated every facet of the game to even their conference record.
Coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler said the Cyclones fell behind early and lost their aggressiveness.
“We got tentative instead of realizing that we had a job to do,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. “We just kind of folded and we obviously played horrible all day.”
Iowa State only had six hits, and no player had more than one in the doubleheader. The Cyclones also struck out 12 times and put only nine runners on base between the two games.
Freshman Alex Johnson said the team may have gotten ahead of itself.
“We had to think about it all night,” Johnson said. “The wind maybe changed some plays; it affected some outs that should’ve been caught.”
Both Cyclone pitchers, senior Alyssa Ransom (7-9) in the first game and freshman Charissa Carlin (9-7) in the second game, struggled early on, falling behind 4-0 early in both games. Iowa State used four pitchers on the day, only one of which, senior Katie Reichling, did not allow a run.
Gemeinhardt-Cesler said the Cowgirls and Cyclones had to do the same thing and the Cowgirls just came out today and played better.
“We should have a competitive advantage playing in the cold,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. “We do it more than anyone else, but they just came out and wanted it more.”
The Cyclones have a busy week ahead. A lineup of six games starts Tuesday with the Cy-Hawk Series rival, Iowa.
